Davis, Efstathiou, Frenk and White simulated the gravitational growth of structure in universes dominated by cold dark matter. Their 1985 models produced clumps, filaments and low-density regions resembling features in galaxy surveys. Detailed comparisons also exposed mismatches, making structure formation a quantitative test rather than just a plausible picture.

Why it mattered

The distribution of galaxies could constrain the properties of the matter forming them.

What came before

Evidence for unseen mass did not explain how galaxies clustered. Rapidly moving dark matter could erase small initial irregularities.
